As a doctoral candidate, you will write a training and guidance plan (or TGP for short) at the start of the whole process. In this blog, we will explain what your TGP should contain, who and what can help you write it and what you should keep in mind.

What is a training and guidance plan?
A training and guidance plan contains all agreements made between you and your supervisor regarding your research. At the very least, a training and guidance plan must include the following:
How do you intend to develop as part of your training to become a researcher? Think of e.g. enrolling in courses, activities and training programmes. If you are granted an educational role, the relevant agreements will also be included in your training and guidance plan. Besides specifying what you intend to do, you must also include a programme for these activities.
In what way and how often will you be receiving personal guidance from your supervisors? What roles and responsibilities will your supervisors have?
One year after your appointment, your training and guidance plan will be updated with relevant additions.
Who and what can help you write your training and guidance plan?
You write your TGP together with your supervisor(s). Keep in mind that the basic agreements for the training and guidance plan are recorded in article 6.9 of the collective labour agreement of Dutch Universities. Note that the guidelines for the training and guidance plan may differ per university and even per faculty. We recommend looking into the exact guidelines that apply to your situation in a timely manner.
Good to know
You must submit your plan within three months of the start of your doctoral research process. If you are an external doctoral candidate – someone doing their doctoral research at a university without being employed there – the maximum submission period is six months after your acceptance into graduate school.
